That’s not my department

Far from being a Nazi, rocket scientist Werner von Braun was a keen lover of children’s entertainment! The two are completely mutually exclusive! Hitler hated Mickey! And how could Walt be a Nazi, making a movie where a sweet Aryan princess co-habits with a group of big-nosed diamond miners? Oy!

“ixnay on the azinay, Walt”

“Right you are, SS-Sturmbannf├╝hrer.”

Tom Lehrer’s stuff seems kind of sour and mean-spirited to me these days, but he could still make a good point:

Watch him fly

My favourite M. Emmet Walsh character is probably the sleazy private eye, Loren Visser, in Blood Simple.

My single favourite scene would be the one where he delivers the incriminating photos to Dan Hedaya. He makes it look so effortless:

Glorified girls!

A not-the-slightest-bit-glossing-over-anything-unsavoury trailer for The Great Ziegfeld. I mean – The Great Ziegfeld!!!

Don’t recognise any of the names? Will anyone remember the cast of [insert recent ensemble film] in seventy-five years? Only nerds like you, buddy.

I understand that you’re upset about the free ride Julia Gillard is getting from the media. The assertion is debatable, of course, but I agree it’s important that we do finally get beneath the skin of the matter and take a cold, hard, objective look at the facts. Here is my analysis of how deserving you are of equal regard by the gentlefolk of the press:

“Keep your burqas off our beehives, terrorists!”

Julia Gillard:

“And all the little munchkins shall be free!!”

“The important thing is that they have been removed from a facility which, quite frankly, was unacceptable for them to continue in.”

Julia Gillard:

“Why, hello little robin! Your breast is as red as my heart!”

“Are you now or have you ever been a friend of Bob Ellis?!”

Rosa Luxembourg Julia Gillard:

“Bourgeois class domination is undoubtedly an historical necessity, but, so too, the rising of the working class against it. Capital is an historical necessity, but, so too, its grave digger, the socialist proletariat.”

So, there it is. Julia is lovely and nice, and you’re still The Scariest Clown in the World.

Because I didn’t want to get any spit on me

It’s Carl Reiner’s birthday. Carl Reiner’s still alive? Yes! He’s 87. Who’s Carl Reiner?

He’s probably most famous as Mel Brooks’ straight man in the 2000 Year Old Man sketch, but here he is being a genius on the Smothers Brothers Show. Yeah, it’s corny ethnic humour, but, you know – feel the width…

Oh, and he directed The Jerk:

Happy Birthday, Carl.
